One of the questions I hear most often is, “When should I schedule my newborn photos?” The short answer is: before your baby arrives!
As a Winston-Salem newborn photographer, I recommend reserving your newborn session during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. This ensures you have a spot on my calendar while giving us the flexibility to adjust your session once your little one makes their debut.
If you’re expecting and wondering when to book your newborn photography session, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
Most families book their newborn session between 20 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
Because babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, I reserve your session based on your estimated due date rather than a specific day. Once your baby is born, you’ll simply let me know, and we’ll finalize the exact date and time.
Booking early offers several benefits:
The ideal time for traditional newborn portraits is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.
During these first two weeks, babies are typically:
These early days allow us to create the timeless, cozy images many parents love.
That said, there is no such thing as “too late.”
Every baby is different, and beautiful images can be created whether your little one is 10 days old, 3 weeks old, or even a few months old.
This is completely normal—and it’s exactly why I schedule newborn sessions around your due date instead of choosing a fixed appointment months in advance.
Once your baby arrives, simply send me a message within the first couple of days, and we’ll confirm your session date.
Whether your little one surprises everyone by arriving early or decides to stay cozy a little longer, we’ll make it work.
As a lifestyle newborn photographer serving Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Lewisville, Kernersville, Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding Triad communities, my sessions focus on genuine connection rather than perfectly posed images.
Because of this, lifestyle sessions can be wonderfully flexible.
If your baby is two, three, or even six weeks old, we can still capture beautiful moments of your growing family.
Some of my favorite galleries have been with babies who were well beyond the traditional “newborn window.”
Whenever possible, I recommend booking before your baby arrives.
Many photographers only accept a limited number of newborn sessions each month to allow flexibility for unpredictable due dates. Waiting until after delivery may mean your preferred photographer no longer has availability.
If your baby has already arrived, don’t panic! Reach out anyway.
I always do my best to accommodate last-minute inquiries whenever my schedule allows.
Once your newborn session is reserved, you’ll receive everything you need to feel prepared.
I’ll guide you through:
My goal is to make the entire experience feel calm, simple, and enjoyable so you can focus on soaking up these fleeting moments with your new baby.
The newborn stage passes in the blink of an eye.
Tiny fingers.
Sleepy stretches.
Soft eyelashes.
The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.
These are the details that change almost daily, and preserving them is about so much more than creating beautiful photographs. It’s about telling the beginning of your family’s story in a way you’ll treasure for years to come.
No worries! Every baby is different. Lifestyle newborn photography doesn’t depend on perfectly sleepy babies. We follow your baby’s cues and create beautiful images whether they’re asleep, awake, or somewhere in between.
Absolutely. Some of my favorite images are the quiet moments between siblings. Your newborn session is about your entire family, and siblings are always welcome.
Most of my newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home, where everyone can relax and your family’s story naturally unfolds. We can also discuss other options if you’re looking for a different setting.
Not at all! We only use a few areas with the best natural light, and I’ll help guide you on how to prepare beforehand. There’s no need for a picture-perfect home.
