One of the most asked questions I get as a Winston Salem family photographer is “should I book a full session or a mini session?” This is a great questions and there are pros and cons to both!
Pros for mini sessions:
Lower cost point. These are more budget friendly sessions if that is what you need or are looking for
Shorter time frame. This is both a pro and a con depending on your family! Some families feel like they need something quick. If your kids are pretty fast to warm up, or maybe you have older/teens who cooperate quickly
Great for a Christmas card photo! If you are just wanting some simple shots for a Christmas card or updated family portrait, this is a good option for you
Cons for mini sessions:
Short time frame. If your kids take awhile to warm up or need some convincing..this may not be the best option for you!
Only offered a few times per year. I offer minis at set times throughout the year, which may or may not work with your schedule
Specific location. I typically pick the location around Winston Salem where these will take place. If you had a spot you really wanted to use for your images, a full family photo session would be your best bet!
Pros for a full session:
I can spend time with your family. I usually take the first 10 or so minutes letting your littles explore and warm up to me. I show them my camera, let them press the button, play them songs..etc. This builds trust (and smiles!)
We can make sure we get a variety of shots from the “posed” photos to the fun/playful photos. I will include some games with your little ones as well
Access to client wardrobe. When you book a full session, you are welcome to borrow a dress and look through a few childrens pieces of clothing that I have as well
Flexibility on session location. We choose a location that fits the “vibe” or vision that you are going for
We can take breaks with the kids if we need since there isn’t a time constraint
Cons of a full session:
To be honest, there aren’t many. Sometimes parents (or dads) are not up for photos. I promise you I make it fun..and it really doesn’t even feel like im taking your photos, but if you are just really dreading it, maybe a mini is best
Occasionally kids really do not want to participate. I can typically work with this and I give you tips ahead of time for preparation..but if your kid warms up fast and is done fast, a mini could be a good choice for you
