There are a few options when it comes to newborn photos and locations. I like to offer choices to my mamas based on several factors!
In home newborn session. A major benefit of doing photos in your home is just that! They are in your home and you don’t have to leave with a newborn! These allow mama to stay comfortable in her space and just jump in some clothes before photos. You would not have to worry about packing up a diaper bag and everything you could possible need for a new baby. Typically when doing an in home session we capture all the set nursery details as well which is another plus! You can also hide away to your room to nurse and sooth baby in between photos if needed. I often will use different rooms in the house depending on the best lighting (since I use all natural light), so it is best to go ahead and have a few space picked up just in case. Often times this is the master bedroom or the living room. This leads me into some cons for in home sessions. As a postpartum mama sometimes the last thing you want to do is pick up your home for a session. This could be a reason that you choose a different option! Another con would be lighting. I am pretty good at finding the good natural light in your home and often will have you pay attention to when it is best before scheduling a time. Occasionally there are homes or apartments..etc. that just don’t receive any light! If this is the case, a studio or outdoor session may be your best bet!
Studio sessions. Studio sessions are great for the above reasons! (good lighting, not having to worry about picking up your space). We would use my in home studio (or rent a studio in which I would cover all of these details in booking). Sometimes it does a freshly postpartum mamas heart good to just get out of the house! This is a great way to have something to do that is still in a comfortable environment. We may not capture all of the nursery details, but we can still get several sweet photos of baby + family. There is a restroom to use as well as a space to go nurse if needed. The studio set up is very simple. I try and keep it clean and bright to eliminate any business that could take away from the baby snuggles.
Outdoor newborn sessions. Outdoor newborn sessions are so much fun! These allow for the space to capture more “family style” photos that incorporate your new baby. Often times I will get photos very similar to a typical candid family session. (big kids running around and playing games, snuggles and tickles on a blanket..etc). I am still able to capture some posed newborn shots using a blanket and a basket which I typically grab at the very beginning of the session. These are great if you prefer more of a family style session, don’t want to use you home, and do not prefer a more posed studio session. Ill tell you a little secret, infants LOVE being outside! There are sometimes even at an in home session that the newborn is fussy and I take him or her outside and they calm right now. With that said, usually at these sessions the babies are pretty laid back. 😉 A con to an outdoor session is weather! Obviously in the winter we won’t take a new baby outside. If it is hot, those postpartum hormones may not like you too much and you may feel pretty sweaty! Some mamas also are not comfortable nursing outside in a potential public setting! These are just a few things we consider and discuss together when dreaming up your perfect session!
