As a resident of Winston Salem, NC and a photographer with a flexible schedule, here are some of my favorite things to do around town with my one year old:
Kaleideum :
One of the best places for young children in Winston-Salem is Kaleideum , a museum designed with children in mind. The museum combines elements of science, art, and natural history in a way that’s engaging for even the youngest visitors. They recently moved into a new building with a really fun water room and rooftop playground.
Old Salem Museums & Gardens :
While Old Salem might seem more geared towards older kids and adults, it’s surprisingly toddler-friendly. Strolling through this historic district is like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and period gardens provide plenty of visual stimulation for your little one. We love taking walks here.
Reynolda Gardens :
For a peaceful and picturesque outing, head to Reynolda Gardens. This expansive estate offers lush gardens, open fields, and winding paths perfect for a leisurely stroll. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic, where your toddler can enjoy a snack in the fresh air. This is a really beautiful area for photographs. I do a lot of my photoshoots for my families here! The gardens offer plenty of shade, which is great for those hot summer days. Let your little one explore the grassy areas, or simply relax and enjoy the serene environment. Don’t forget to bring a blanket and some toys to extend your stay. You can also visit one of my favorite coffee shops are reynolda: Dough Joes.
Hanes Park :
Hanes Park is one of Winston-Salem’s premier green spaces and offers an excellent playground that’s perfect for toddlers. The playground has age-appropriate equipment where your one-year-old can climb, slide, and explore safely. The park also features wide-open spaces that are ideal for a game of catch or a simple runaround.
Piedmont Environmental Center :
Located a short drive from Winston-Salem in nearby High Point, the Piedmont Environmental Center offers nature trails that are stroller-friendly, providing an opportunity for you and your toddler to enjoy the great outdoors. The trails wind through diverse habitats, including forests and wetlands, making it a perfect spot for a nature walk.
There’s also a small, interactive nature center where your toddler can see live animals, touch natural objects like pinecones and rocks, and explore exhibits that introduce them to the local environment in an age-appropriate way.
Your one-year-old will love the “Enchanted Forest,” a whimsical area filled with soft structures, interactive displays, and plenty of opportunities for imaginative play. The museum is also equipped with a designated toddler play area where younger children can safely explore and interact with the exhibits.
Visit a Local Farmer’s Market :
Winston-Salem has several farmers’ markets that are great for a leisurely family outing. The Cobblestone Farmers Market, for instance, is not only a place to pick up fresh, local produce but also an opportunity for your toddler to experience the colors, sounds, and smells of a bustling market.
Some markets have live music and other family-friendly activities, making it a vibrant, sensory-rich experience for young children. Plus, you can stock up on some healthy snacks for the rest of your adventures!
Storytime at Forsyth County Public Library :
The Forsyth County Public Library offers regular storytime sessions that are perfect for toddlers. These sessions often include not just stories, but also songs, rhymes, and interactive play, making them an engaging way to introduce your child to the joys of reading.
Tanglewood Park :
A bit outside Winston-Salem, Tanglewood Park is worth the short drive for its beautiful scenery and ample family-friendly amenities. The park features walking trails, a lake, and plenty of picnic areas. In the summer, the park’s aquatic center is a big hit with families, featuring a splash pad that’s perfect for toddlers. We love going to the playgrounds, the train, and the gardens. I also several family and maternity photos are tanglewood park!
